Year in Review: Our 20 Best Instagram Photos of 2016

As we reflect on our travels in 2016, we are digging through the archives and reviewing the past year via our JetSetting Fools Instagram account (@JSFtravel). In an effort to wrap the past 365 days of travel into one post, we’ve picked our 20 best Instagram photos of 2016 that reflect our travel experiences this year.
In 2016, we explored new countries and revisited a few that we love. We rang in 2016 in the Netherlands, got a real dose of winter on a quick jaunt to Iceland in February and then completely thawed out with a five-month stint in Costa Rica. After a quick visit to the States, we took off for Europe in the middle of the summer…and have yet to leave. For five months, we’ve ventured through the countries of the former Yugoslavia (including Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Kosovo and Macedonia) before landing in London for Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
We invite you to review the year with us and take a look at our 20 best Instagram photos of 2016.

Best of 2015: Our 20 favorite Instagram Photos

As we close out 2015 and head into the new year, we can’t help but look back at our previous 12 months of travel – and we’re doing so by looking through our favorite Instagram photos of 2015.

We started the year in Italy, bounced through the Balkans and Eastern Europe, made a quick stop in Dublin and experienced London with our first housesitting assignment. We wrapped up our ‘Round the World journey with a return to the United States for a seven-state whirlwind tour (Ohio, Arizona, Oregon, California, Florida, Colordo, Massachusetts) before heading back to the Land Down Under for our second housesit – and longest stay at two months – in Melbourne. From there, we were lured back to the Croatian coastline, made a quick jaunt to Rome to meet up with family, followed by a stay in Sarajevo and are ending the year in the Netherlands with our third housesitting experience of 2015.

Sunrise on Leg 3 of our Epic Travel Day

Flying Standby on Connecting Flights: An epic travel day

4 flights. 4 countries. 40 hours. Starting with a 4:00am wake up call, we made the journey from Hobart to Zagreb flying standby on connecting flights in what ranks as our most epic travel day ever.

When we made plans to go to Croatia after Australia, I didn’t consider how we would get there; Kris is in charge of travel details. In this case, that was probably the right choice. If I had known what I was in for, I might have reconsidered our options of where to go next. In addition to the normal stress that comes with travel days, we were flying standby on connecting flights – all four segments – with Kris’s flight benefits. Meaning, seats would only be assigned to us if there were open seats available. Attempting to connect on four flights on four different airlines, touching down in four different countries as stand-by passengers was no small feat.

Those are always tough questions, but to share some of our best memories, we are starting a new series of posts called Best Of Our Journey. In each post, we will discuss the Best Of a specific category. If you’ve been wondering what our Best or Favorite {fill in the blank} was, leave a comment and we’ll compose a post for it!

As much as we love exploring new cities and sights, we equally love escaping the city for nature hikes. We’re not ready to tackle Mount Everest, so we stick to the nature trails enveloped in forests, gravel switchbacks that lead to summits or strolls through city parks. As we traveled around the world, we found ample opportunities to stretch our legs with Mother Nature. Below is a list of our Best Hikes of Our RTW Journey:

We have a knack for finding local craft beer. We swear, we aren’t seeking them out; we’ve merely had the pleasure of stumbling upon them all around the world. In some cities, like Wellington, New Zealand, the craft beer scene was already established, while in others, like Zagreb, Croatia, it was just at the beginning. Regardless, wherever we were in the world, if local craft brew was available, we gave it a try.

We love sunsets (who doesn’t?!) and we were treated to some spectacular ones all around the world. We could create a book just on sunsets, but here is a look at the Best Sunsets of our RTW Journey:

Choosing our Best Accommodations of Our RTW Journey is even more difficult than determining our favorite cities! We diligently researched every place we stayed (often relying on Airbnb) and it paid off, as we had amazing experiences in nearly all of them. It would be much easier to make a (very short) list of the few disappointing airport hotels we stayed in. Even our overnight stay on the departures curb of the Tahiti Airport was pretty fantastic (Hello, we were in Tahiti!).

During our travels, partaking in the local cuisine provided some of our most interesting experiences. Learning the flavors and methods of cooking in each region usually came with a bit of history about the people and place we were in. As budget travelers, when dining out, we made a conscience effort to spend our dollars on the local specialties and we were seldom disappointed.

As our yearlong journey came to a close, the number one question we’ve been asked is, “What is your favorite place?” Let’s be clear: This is an impossible question to answer! We stayed in 46 places over the course of 388 days and we fell in love with all of them. We understand that this is not normal. We had anticipated – and left our schedule open for – the inevitable city we didn’t jive with or place we simply felt too uncomfortable to stay. It never happened.
