Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic is a fairytale town nestled on the banks of the curving Vltava River in the land of Bohemia. The mighty Cesky Krumlov Castle sits atop a craggy hill and charming cobblestone streets pleasantly wind through the pristinely preserved Old Town. The best things to do in Cesky Krumlov dot the idyllic landscape – and the top attractions can be toured on foot in a single day.

Through the centuries, the enchanting town has retained its medieval appearance; it escaped destruction during war and from natural disasters. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992, Cesky Krumlov invites visitors to step back in time and walk the same paths as those from long ago.

#1 Explore the Cesky Krumlov Castle Complex

Sunset at Cesky Krumlov Castle, Czech Republic

The Krumlov Castle complex sits on a rocky bluff at the top of the Old Town. The Upper Castle, which was built directly into the rock during the 13th century, was part of the original structure that belonged to the Witigonen family, also known as the Lords of Krumlov.

The Witigonen royal line ended in 1302 and all property transferred to the Lords of Rosenberg, who decided to settle in Cesky Krumlov and reigned there for 300 years.

Walk across Stone Bridge, Cesky Krumlov, CZ

It is free to explore the castle grounds – and the stone bridge and gate are not to be missed. An original protective feature of the Gothic castle, the bridge leads from the 1st Courtyard of the castle into the 2nd Courtyard where the Little Castle and Tower stand.

A wooden drawbridge crossed the moat until 1760 when it was replaced by a stone bridge and the addition of statues of Mary and Joseph. One of the unique things to see is the Bears that roam the moat below the bridge. Cesky Castle has a long history of keeping bears in the moat – a tradition that dates to the year 1707.

Cesky Krumlov Castle Tours

Visitors who want to see the interior can purchase tickets for one of the castle tours routes. Each tour visits different rooms within the castle. The basic tour visits the chapel, Eggenberg Hall and Masquerade Hall. Other tours navigate the vast art collection, the Baroque Castle Theatre and the Stables.

#2 Climb Castle Tower

In Cesky Krumlov there is no structure more iconic than the Castle Tower; it’s a symbol of the city and a landmark sight. Standing at 178-feet-tall, the tower rises 280 feet above the Vltava River. There are four bells housed inside, two of which were cast in the year 1406.

Along with the Little Castle that the tower stands atop, it is the oldest part of the Krumlov Castle complex, dating to the first half of the 13th century. Originally designed in the gothic style, it was converted into a Renaissance residence in 1581. The tower was extended in height in the 14th century and was decorated with paintings in the year 1590. In the 1990s, extensive renovations took place to revive the colorful mural paintings.

The Little Castle and Castle Tower that are perched high above the town rank as top Cesky Krumlov attractions to visit. In fact, one of the best things to do in Cesky Krumlov is to climb Castle Tower – as the views from the top are sensational.

A ticket is required to make the steep climb, but it also includes entry into the Cesky Krumlov Castle Museum, which tells the stories of the previous owners: The Rozmberks, Eggenberks and Schwarzenbergs.

#3 Take in the View from Cloak Bridge

View of Cesky Krumlov Castle Bridge, Czech Republic

The impressive Cloak Bridge – a three-story, stone bridge standing on massive arches – is one of the most important Cesky Krumlov sights. The bridge connects the main complex to the Castle Gardens and Theater. Originally built as a wooden bridge in the 15th century, it was reconstructed four times over the next one hundred years…but has changed little since 1777.

Crowds often gather on the Cloak Bridge for fantastic views of the Cesky Krumlov Old Town and St. Vitus Church below. The statue of John of Nepomuk is one of four that stand on the Cloak Bridge leading to the Castle Gardens.

#4 Discover The Castle Garden and Viewpoints

The 17th century Baroque garden at the Cesky Krumlov Castle is exquisite. The meticulously planned garden features flowerbeds, crisscrossing paths and ponds. As part of the castle complex, visiting the gardens is one of the free things to do in Cesky Krumlov.

The hilltop garden takes a little effort to reach. While at the elevated park, be sure to seek out the stunning viewpoints that stretch over the rooftops of the Old Town.

#5 See the Cesky Krumlov Town Square

Marking the heart of the Old Town in Cesky Krumlov, the expansive Town Square – or Svornosti Square – is a must-see on your Cesky Krumlov sightseeing route.

Ringed by cheerfully-painted buildings, the center of the square is occupied by a Plague Column and fountain. In fact, a public fountain has graced the Town Square since 1577, although, the current stone fountain dates to 1843.

The Plague Column – topped with a golden statue of Mary and surrounded by eight patron saints – was erected in 1717 in remembrance of those who died during the epidemic in the 1680s.

#6 Get Lost in the Twisting Old Town Lanes

People walking in the Old Town, Cesky Krumlov, CZ

The street plan of Old Town of Cesky Krumlov, which sits below the castle, was developed in the 13th century and was first mentioned as a settlement in the year 1274. Rather than a square grid, the cobblestone streets curve with the bend of the river. The streets are lined with ancient buildings, which are now mostly occupied by hotels, museums, restaurants, art galleries and tourist shops.

Exploring the Old Lanes, Cesky Krumlov, CZ

It’s fun to get lost in the twisting lanes of the Old Town. However, Latran Street, the cobblestone lane that leads to the Cesky Krumlov Castle, is our favorite. Flanked by exquisitely preserved dwellings, we think it is the prettiest street in Cesky Krumlov!

#7 Marvel at the Church of St. Vitus

Exterior view of Church of St. Vitus, Cesky Krumlov, CZ

The landmark St. Vitus Church, which stands on a slight incline on the south side of the Old Town, exemplifies the balance of power between church and state.

Built in the 14th century – and renovated many times since – the Roman Catholic church is home to 15th century paintings, a 17th century altar, a 16th century organ and the tombstone of Wilhelm von Rosenberg. The neo-gothic church spire was added in the 19th century.

#8 Visit St. Martin Chapel and Mestesky Park

Exterior of St. Martin Chapel, Cesky Krumlov, CZ

The small St. Martin Chapel sits within the Town Park (Mestesky Park) just to the south of the Old Town. Built of wood in 1585 as a cemetery chapel, it was reconstructed in 1717. Today, the chapel occasionally hosts choir concerts.

In 1892, the graveyard was relocated and the land was converted into a park. We think the lush greenspace is one of the best places to visit in Cesky Krumlov to escape the tourist crowds.

#9 Walk along the Vltava River

Bridge Along the Vltava River, Cesky Krumlov, CZ

The Vltava River is the longest river in the Czech Republic, flowing 270 miles through the country. It is the river that flows beneath the Charles Bridge in Prague and also below the castle in Cesky Krumlov.

The town of Cesky Krumlov was built around three distinct and deep curves of the Vltava River. Today, pedestrian paths line the riverside, inviting guests to stroll along the flowing stream while taking in the sights of the beautiful historic buildings in Cesky Krumlov.

In the summer, one of the unique things to do in Cesky Krumlov is to participate in a water sport. When it is warm, the river fills with rafts, canoes and kayaks as tourists and locals alike take in the atmosphere while floating by the town.

Another one of the exceptional Cesky Krumlov things to do is to hop aboard a historic wooden raft for a 50-minute river cruise. During our winter visit, we had it nearly all to ourselves!

#10 Hike Hill of the Crosses to Our Lady of Sorrows

Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows and St. Crosses, Cesky Krumlov, CZ

Perched on the hills south of Cesky Krumlov, visiting Our Lady of Sorrows Chapel makes for a great hike. Walkers will pass by lovely trees and the stations of the cross, as it’s part of a pilgrimage route. It’s also possible to drive, but we felt it was an excellent opportunity to work off some of that Czech food and beer!

In addition to visiting the complex itself (small fee, cash only), you’ll get a different vantage point of Cesky Krumlov from afar. The trek is rated as moderate and should be completed as a loop. We suggest allowing at least an hour to make the hike and enjoy the area, so hopefully you’ll have time on your visit to Cesky Krumlov!
