Naturally, we are often asked what our ‘favorites’ were during our travels around the globe. Those are always tough questions, but to share some of our best memories, we are starting a new series of posts called Best Of Our Journey. In each post, we will discuss the Best Of a specific category. If you’ve been wondering what our Best or Favorite {fill in the blank} was, leave a comment and we’ll compose a post for it!

As much as we love exploring new cities and sights, we equally love escaping the city for nature hikes. We’re not ready to tackle Mount Everest, so we stick to the nature trails enveloped in forests, gravel switchbacks that lead to summits or strolls through city parks. As we traveled around the world, we found ample opportunities to stretch our legs with Mother Nature. Below is a list of our Best Hikes of Our RTW Journey:

Parque Municiple Llao Llao – Bariloche, Argentina

Picturesque Bariloche, Argentina is set on a lake among snowcapped mountains and surrounded in natural beauty. Using our basic map and a few vague pieces of advice found on the internet, we somehow made our way on three trails to seven lookouts during our full day hike at Parque Municiple Llao Llao. The dirt paths took us through forests of Arraynes, to lake side vistas and hill top views. We nearly had the entire park to ourselves, which enabled us to linger and enjoy the insanely stunning scenery.

Ana Kai Tangata, Rano Kau and Orongo – Easter Island

Easter Island is magical. Isolated from the rest of the world, tribes created Moai protectors and, later, formed the Birdman Competition. Roads now connect the historic sights, but we opted to experience the island sans car and hike to Ana Kai Tangata gathering cave, up to Rano Kau crater and on to Orongo – the site of the Birdman Competition. The views of the island and over the water were breathtaking, but the historical aspect made this truly an exceptional hike.

Red and Blue Arrow Trail – Cairns, Australia

There is more nature in Cairns, Australia than the Great Barrier. Inland is a fantastic Botanical Garden and adjacent to that is Mount Whitfield offering several hiking trails. We set out on the Red and Blue Arrow Trails that lead through dense rainforest to scenic viewpoints. Under the canopy of leaves, the earth was moist and fragrant – and we even encountered a wallaby!

Hillside hike to San Giovanni Castle – Kotor, Montenegro

High above the walled city of Kotor, Montenegro is the hillside San Giovanni Castle. A path – comprised of 1355 steps – leads past a church and a hollowed out fort on the way to the castle (not much more than a shell today) at the top. More impressive than the remnants of the structure is the view down to the orange tiled rooftops, over the teal blue bay and out to the snowcapped mountains.

Lake Bled Scenic Viewpoints – Lake Bled, Slovenia

Lake Bled is a fairytale setting. Nestled in the mountains, a castle clings to the side of a cliff overhanging the lake and, in the middle, a church occupies a lone island. A flat path traces the lake’s edge, with plenty of benches to stop and savor the view. But, on the SW side of the lake, a trail leads into the woods. Once enveloped in trees, the trail quickly inclined, leading to a clearing that provided a spectacular bird’s eye view of the lake below. The trail continued to climb to a second clearing with sweeping vistas that stretched for miles.

  1. I am so jealous! Some wonderful hikes! I didn’t realize you guys were in Colorado or I would have offered to take you to some of my favorite hikes around here. Beautiful pics!

  2. Totally agree with Kotor having done the same hike. We would have liked to see lake Bled but just ran out of time…might have a chance of seeing it in the autumn sometime. Nice pics!
