We’d come across countless breathtaking photographs of the famous Trakai Castle – and wanted to see it for ourselves.

Sitting on an island in the middle of Lake Galve, the turreted citadel is straight from the pages of a fairytale.
Combined with direct train connections and the chance to eat some of the best Kibinai in Lithuania, it was a no-brainer to plan a day trip to Trakai from Vilnius!
Planning One Day in Trakai, Lithuania
Despite all the fun Things To Do in Vilnius, taking a day trip to Trakai is practically required…and we found it fairly simple to plan.
Kris sorted out getting there, while I worked on our sightseeing route. Although the castle is the main attraction, there are more things to see and do…and, of course, eat!
Our one-day itinerary in Trakai showcases the best of the historic area – from the most incredible views of the castle to scrumptious local food to boating on the lake.
If you would rather leave all the logistics to someone else, you can join a Trakai 1-day tour with guide. This private tour gets rave reviews – or you could join this group tour that also visits the Hill of Angels.
One-Day Trakai Itinerary

To make the most of our Vilnius day trip, we squeezed the best things to do in Trakai into a succinct itinerary. Later, we share a map of attractions and a few helpful bits of advice.
Mid-Morning: Train from Vilnius to Trakai

We believe the best transport option for a one-day trip to Trakai is the train. For our excursion, we arrived at the Vilnius railway station in time to board a service leaving just before 11am.
Much more comfortable than the bus, the train has snacks for purchase and on-board bathrooms. It’s a quick ride though – as it only takes about 30 minutes.
The train station in Trakai is located nearly 2 miles south of the castle – and there are two routes to reach it: via a lakeside path or through the center of town.
Money-Saving Tip: The train tickets are not very expensive – but you will save a few euros by purchasing yours at least one day in advance and traveling at off-peak times.
Late-Morning: Lakeside Path and Castle Views

From the Trakai Train Station, we recommend following the lakeside path north. It’s the route we took – and loved how quickly we were immersed in nature.
The path hugs the shoreline, providing sensational views across the water. Along the way, there are small beaches, wooden piers and the ship Vytinė.
Now permanently docked, this 19th century merchant vessel was once an essential part of trade and transportation in Trakai.

Further along is the Trakai Hillfort – also known as the Trakai Peninsula Castle. Dating to the 14th century, only the stone walls and a few defensive towers remain standing.
Now maintained by the Trakai Historical National Park, you can go inside for a small fee – but we decided to skip it.
Travel Tip: If you are crunched on time or not up for the walk, you can take a local bus or taxi between the station and town center.
Mid-Day: Trakai Castle Viewpoints

The top reason for visiting Trakai is the iconic island castle – and we wanted to see it from every angle!
From the north side of the peninsula, you will get your first glimpse of the Gothic structure standing on the islet.
While it’s a great vantage point, if you are up for a quick detour, there is a secret spot just a short jaunt away.

Cross over the Vytautas Pedestrian Bridge and follow the trail as it curves north. After crossing a second wooden bridge, pass the boats in the marina to a hidden Trakai Island Castle viewpoint.
This is an out-and-back diversion, so retrace your steps and then continue your walk along the path to the next stunning location: Castle Island Viewing Deck.

Here, a wooden boardwalk extends over the water offering a picture-perfect view. This is the place for Trakai photographs and selfies.
Photo Tip: The Castle Island Viewing Platform can get crowded with tour groups. Keep walking west and you will find more space.
Early Afternoon: Kibinai Lunch

For now, resist the urge to cross over to the island; first you will want to get something to eat!
During our 1-day in Trakai, we feasted on an indulgent lunch at Senoji Kibinine. We don’t think there is a better place in town to get a taste of the local flavor!
Established in 1969, Old Kebinine uses traditional recipes to make authentic Karaite Kibinai. These crescent-shaped hand pies – which are a Must-Eat in Lithuania – are generously filled with meat, cheese and vegetables.

We ordered a variety of Kibinai – along with the classic Cold Beetroot Soup – for an exceptional meal in an atmospheric setting.
Foodie Tip: There are multiple Senoji Kibinine restaurants in Trakai – including a lakefront establishment and a food truck. During our autumn trip, however, the Old Inn was the only one open.
Afternoon: Trakai Island Castle

There is no doubt about it, Island Castle is a must-see in Trakai – and it’s worth getting an up-close look (even if you don’t intend to go inside).
Built in the 14th century by the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the structure originated as a military fortress.
It was significantly expanded by Grand Duke Vytautas in the early 15th century and renovated into a lavish palace.
Later, it served as a prison – but then was plundered and abandoned in the 17th century. Restoration began in the 1950s and is ongoing, so expect some scaffolding!

The stronghold is linked to the mainland via a bridge – and it’s totally free to walk out to the island. Visitors can explore the exterior and peek into the courtyard without paying an entry fee.
That said, a ticket is required for the museum. Rather than fully furnished rooms, exhibits showcase a mishmash of archaeological artifacts and a timeline of Lithuanian history.
Personal Insight: Based on fellow traveler reviews (and the gorgeous weather), we decided to forgo the museum. Had we gone inside, we would’ve spent about 30 minutes perusing the displays.
Mid-Afternoon: Trakai Boat Tour

Next up on the itinerary is a fun boat trip on Lake Galve. This experience is not to be missed; it was a highlight of our day!
Tour operators line the lake’s shore, extending in both directions from the wooden bridge that leads to Castle Island.
We boarded a boat with an open upper deck that allowed for uninterrupted views. Our 30-minute tour cost 5 euros…and worth every cent!

While there was no commentary, we whirled around the lake, sailing close to the Castle Island shore and the gleaming white Užutrakis Manor House, which once was home to the influential Tyszkiewicz family.
Itinerary Tip: We loved our relaxing cruise on the lake, but there are other watercraft for rent – including paddle boats, kayaks and SUPs.
Late-Afternoon: Trakai Town Sights

Round out your 1-day trip in Trakai by touring the other historical sights as you make your way back towards the rail station.
Once a bustling settlement – and even briefly the capital of Lithuania – Old Town Trakai is brimming with character, culture and charm.

One of the top things to see is the wooden homes – each with three front windows. These distinct houses were built by the Karaites (Turkic Jews), who were brought here from Crimea to guard the castles.
The Kenesa Synagogue is a long-standing Trakai landmark, but it was closed to visitors during our trip, so we only got a glimpse through the gates.

The Trakai Basilica – also called the Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary – is well-worth going inside. Founded by Vytautas the Great in 1409, it was later embellished in Baroque décor.
The Orthodox Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos and the Former Russian Postal Station are two more notable attractions in town.
Sightseeing Tip: Pop into the Trakai Tourism Office for some local knowledge and a paper map!
Early Evening: Train to Vilnius

When you’re done discovering, wrap up your 1-day itinerary in Trakai by trekking the final distance to the train station.
We walked the shoreline path on the westside of the Trakai Peninsula, enjoying the afternoon sun and more stunning vistas.
If you have some spare time, take one last lingering view over the lake from the Prieplauka (Fishing Pier) that is just across the street from the station.
Top Tip: We heard during the summertime boat taxis run into town from here, too!

Travel Tips for your Trakai Day Trip from Vilnius

Now that you know what to do in Trakai for a day, we have some honest advice to help make your outing more enjoyable.
Learn How to Pronounce Trakai
Before you set off, you will want to make sure you’re correctly pronouncing the city’s name. We weren’t! It’s said like this: Trah-Kee.
Decide How Long to Spend in Trakai
In our opinion, one day in Trakai is enough. We ended up spending about 6 hours there – and it was a very leisurely time with a long, sit-down lunch and a soothing sightseeing pace.
If you decide to stay longer, there are more Trakai things to do. Numerous hiking trails crisscross the forests plus there are additional water activities in the summer.
Furthermore, a very popular – and what we can only imagine would be an unforgettable – activity is to soar away on a hot air balloon!
Where To Stay
If you plan on spending a full 24 hours in Trakai, you will need to find accommodations. The waterfront boutique Apvalaus Stalo Klubas Gastro & Spa Hotel has an exceptional location – and the prices are affordable, too!
What You Need for a Day Trip to Trakai

Durable Shoes: Comfortable travel shoes are must! I like these versatile trainers.
Travel Camera: We use a DSLR Canon Rebel; it takes quality photos and is a well-priced camera for travelers.
Day Bag: Carry a travel pack that is big enough to stow everything you will need. We like these small backpacks.
Weather Gear: Sunscreen and insect repellent are necessities in the summer. For spring and fall, bring a raincoat and travel umbrella and in winter…prepare to freeze!
