Tips to Stay Cool in Europe this Summer

As the temperatures are soaring across Europe, travelers need to devise a plan on how to stay cool while on vacation.

Aiming for a ‘Coolcation,’ we decided to spend the summer in England. As luck would have it, the country just experienced its hottest-ever June…and yet another heat wave on its way.

It’s fair to stay that, right now, we are in the thick of it – and we are utilizing all the tips, tricks and hacks to stay on the shady side of cool!

With a blazing sun and a general lack of air conditioning, staying cool in Europe during summertime may sound like mission impossible. But with our tips, you can enjoy your summer European vacation in comfort!

#1 Bring a Rechargeable Fan

This little handheld, rechargeable fan is a literal lifesaver. It’s small, portable and even has a base that enables it to stand on its own.

We use it while out sightseeing and at night in our accommodations. For its size, it packs a punch…and we couldn’t imagine traveling without it!

#2 Splurge for Air Con

Unlike in the United States, air conditioning is not common in a lot of Europe. If you are accustomed to air con, make sure to book a room that has it, even if you have to splurge for the luxury.

You can select air condition as an amenity on search engines, like Booking.com. We also recommend reading fellow traveler reviews to see how they rate the A/C.

Best Ways To Keep Cool in Europe This Summer

#3 Deploy the Duvet Hack

One of the things I miss most about the US is a top sheet on the bed. The thin, cotton fabric is delightful on hot summer nights – but it’s practically non-existent in Europe.

Instead, most hotels and vacation rentals use duvets, which are often stuffed with heavy inserts. The easy hack is to simply remove the insert and use the duvet cover like a top sheet!

If you want to be sure you can sleep in cool comfort, consider packing a lightweight sheet or Travel Sleep Sack

#4 Stay Hydrated

This might seem like a no-brainer, but between the intense heat, the increased walking and over-imbibing on alcohol, it’s all too easy to get dehydrated while vacationing in Europe.

We recommend carrying a refillable water bottle while sightseeing. An electrolyte drink mix – like Liquid IV – can also help with hydration.

Advice on How To Stay Cool on your Europe Trip

#5 Avoid Sunburn

Staying cool in Europe with a sunburn is nearly impossible – so it’s best to make sure you don’t get sunburnt.

Bring plenty of high-SPF sunscreen (it can cost a small fortune in Europe) and wear a wide-brimmed hat. A travel umbrella can also be used to provide cover from direct sunlight.

#6 Pack Cool Clothing

One of the best ways to stay cool during summer in Europe is to wear the right clothing. And I’m not talking fashion, here!

We recommend wearing loose-fitting and lightweight clothes – and I believe dresses are a dream for summer sightseeing.

Breathable, moisture-wicking clothing (think athleisure wear) can help you stay cool and dry, too.

If your style is tank top and shorts, just remember to bring a wrap that you can carry in your day pack for entering churches.

#7 Make a ‘Keep Cool’ Europe Itinerary

When Planning Your European Trip Itinerary, make sure to account for the hot weather. Plan outdoor excursions and walking tours for the mornings or evenings.

Self-guided city tours (like these) and DIY day trips – rather than guide-led and organized adventures – will allow for more flexibility if you fear getting caught in the heat.

In the afternoon, take advantage of indoor activities – like visiting museums or going shopping. Heat can also cause fatigue, so scheduling an afternoon nap at your hotel can be a good idea, too!

#8 Eat Light Meals

Eating heavy foods can raise your body temperature. A good way to keep cool is to eat a lighter meal – especially for lunch.

When it’s hot outside, our favorite midday meal is a simple picnic. We like to gather fruits, nuts and maybe some dried meat from the local market, then find a shaded park where we can dine al fresco!

#9 Use a Cooling Towel

Cooling cloths are a traveler’s dream on sunny days! The lightweight, mesh microfiber towels are specifically designed to cause a cooling effect when soaked in water.

Once wet, drape the towel around your neck, wrap it over your head or tie it around your wrists for instant cooling comfort.

This Cooling Towel can be used to wipe away sweat and provides UV protection. Seriously, how cool is that?!

#10 Try Cooling Powder

Using talcum powder to combat chafing and perspiration dates to ancient times. We can attest to its advantages; we used it for years while living in the desert city of Phoenix, AZ.

But Cooling Powder has the added benefit of creating a chilling sensation. We haven’t personally tried this remedy yet, but it comes highly recommended by fellow travelers who suffer from prickly heat.
