Booking the Best Activities

While some travelers want nothing more than to spend their vacation relaxing on the beach with a good book, most people venturing into foreign lands want to fill their days with sightseeing and adventures. Planning how you will explore a city can – and should – be done ahead of time. We are sharing our tips for how to plan trip activities - and we have rounded up our favorite Travel Activity Resources to help other travelers plan their trip!

How To Plan Travel Activities

After we decide to visit a new destination, the first thing we do is start planning travel activities. We make a list of everything that we what to see and do during our trip. We rank each trip activity, from must-sees down to if-we-have-time activities - and determine how to best fit them into our trip itinerary.

Like every other part of the trip planning process, choosing which activities to include in your itinerary is a balance. You don't want to over plan and pack so many trip activities into your plan that you have no time to enjoy the destination. On the other hand, you don't want to under plan, which can lead to spending a majority of the time on your trip doing research and planning.

Travel Activity Resources

To find tours and activities for our trips, we use a variety of resources - from tourist board websites to tour booking sites to blogs (like ours!), which are filled with a wealth of destination specific information (check out our Travel Destinations page!).

Tours and Trip Activities

The best way to start researching activities for travel is to look at tour and activity websites.

A fantastic one-stop-shop resource for planning activities – from city walking tours to multi-day trips – is Viator. The site is well-established and lists more than 60,000 worldwide activities. Best of all, the site includes reviews from fellow travelers so that you can be sure you are picking the absolute best tours to include in your trip plan.

While Viator is typically our go-to resource for seeking out the best day trips, walking tours and other activities, we also like Get Your Guide. The robust travel activity platform is easy to us - and sometimes has unique activities not found elsewhere.

We recommend taking a look at both websites and finding the activities for your trip that will make memories to last a lifetime!

Sights and Sightseeing

In addition to tours and activities, it’s important to research destination sights that you want to visit on your own without a tour guide. City attractions, museums, cruises and other sights should be woven into your trip plan.

Destination Sightseeing Cards

We are always conscious about our travel budget - and, when it comes to sightseeing, we want to ensure we are getting the best bang for the buck. City sightseeing cards can offer an immense value, but only if you choose the right one!

Different cards offer different perks. City cards are either valid for a specific number of days or a specific number of activities. The goal is to find a card that includes the activities that most appeal to you at the most cost-saving price.

It often makes sense to purchase the city cards in advance, as many city cards include public transportation, which can be a big help from the moment you reach your destination. (Both Viator and Get Your Guide offer destination cards - and include user reviews! - so it’s a good place to start your search.)
