#20 Shopping in Phoenix

Shopping is one of the most popular Phoenix activities. Visitors looking for name-brand retailers and luxury boutiques should start their spree at Biltmore Fashion Park, then head for Scottsdale Fashion Square.

Downtown Glendale on the west side is the place to go for antiquing and collectibles. Those interested in finding vintage items will want to shop in the Melrose District.

Want to shop local? Check out The Hive on 16th. Local artists sell their wares and handmade goods – and there is a great coffee shop on site, too.

The Phoenix Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings is ideal for locally grown produce and other Arizona products.

#21 Old Town Scottsdale

Visiting historic Old Town Scottsdale is a must when visiting Phoenix. The district is reminiscent of an Old Western town with an air of chicness.

The streets are lined with shops selling Native American crafts and Western wear alongside boutique fashion stores.

Restaurants abound in the area to satisfy any palette and get your sweet treat at Sugar Bowl. We prefer casual nightlife in Old Town Scottsdale, so the landmark Rusty Spur Saloon and the laid-back Coach House are our go-to spots.

Ranking as one of the top attractions in Phoenix, the Desert Botanical Garden features thousands of plants in the 55-acre park.

In addition to the incredible display of desert flora, DBG also hosts numerous events throughout the year. Special exhibits – like Chihuly in the Desert – are extremely popular.

That said, the annual wintertime Las Noches de las Luminarias gets our vote as the absolute best thing to see in Phoenix in December!

#25 Pueblo Grande Museum

Featuring the preserved ruins of an ancient Native American village, Pueblo Grande is an excellent place in Phoenix to learn about the culture of the Hohokam tribe.

Inside the museum, visitors can see recovered objects – like jewelry, tools and pots. Guests then embark on a trail through the ruins and recreated dwellings to get a better understanding of how the village likely looked.

#26 Tovrea Castle at Carraro Heights

Called the Wedding Cake Castle by locals, Tovrea is a fine example of art deco architecture…and the cactus gardens are exquisite.

At Phoenix Mountains Preserve hike up to Piestewa Peak for stunning 360-degree views. At South Mountain, hop on the Holbert Trail to Dobbins Lookout.

Serious hikers can tackle the challenging Echo Canyon Trail on Camelback Mountain. We detail them all in our article, Best Phoenix Hiking Trails.

Visitors who would rather hike with a guide can book a Sunrise or Sunset Tour or a Private Hike

Want to attempt summiting  Camelback Mountain? Take the trek with a knowledgeable and certified guide on this Camelback Hiking Tour

View of an Arizona Hot Air Balloon Ride in the morning

A Phoenix outdoor activity that gets rave reviews (but one we have yet to do) is taking a hot air balloon ride.

Paddling through the landscapes and past towering cactus is so peaceful that it’s almost surreal. Visitors can organize their own rental or join a Kayak Excursion.

#45 Salt River Tubing

One of our favorite activities in the summer is going for a leisurely float down the Salt River. The cool mountain water is absolutely refreshing in the summertime heat.

The route snakes through the scenic Tonto National Forest, meandering through pristine desert landscapes.

It can get a little rowdy on the weekend when the beer flows faster than the river. Pack your own cooler and canned drinks (no glass) – and bring a designated driver or book transportation!

The 40-mile Apache Trail (officially AZ Route 88) is an outstanding scenic drive. Just be aware that most of the route is unpaved!

Top attractions on the Apache Trail are the Goldfield Ghost Town, the historic mining town of Tortilla Flat, Canyon Lake and the old-fashioned Dolly Steamboat and the Theodore Roosevelt Dam.

From Roosevelt Dam, avid road-trippers can continue driving in a loop, making stops at the Tonto National Monument Cliff Dwelling and the town of Globe (pop into the Drift Inn Saloon!).

On the other hand, if you want to leave the planning – and driving – to someone else, join this highly-rated Apache Trail Tour!

Really want a grand experience from above the canyon? Take a Grand Canyon helicopter tour – get the details!

#58 Northern Arizona Tour

If you want to check out things to see around Phoenix to the south, then we recommend making a trip down to Tombstone.

While you’re there, combine it with a stop in Tucson to see the San Xavier Mission and Saguaro National Park!

Tombstone – also known as The Town Too Tough To Die – is home to famous Western sights, like the OK Corral and the Big Nose Kate Saloon.

The two attractions we suggest along the way are San Xavier Mission, a striking baroque Catholic church that was completed in 1797, and Saguaro National Park, where you can hike amongst the largest cacti in the US.

Seeing all this in one day is likely too much – so you will have to pick and choose. Alternatively, let a guide lead the way (and make the drive) on an organized tour of Tombstone and San Xavier.

What To Pack for Your Phoenix Trip

Packing is an important thing to consider when planning a trip to Phoenix. So grab our FREE Packing Checklist and let’s get to Arizona!

Light Clothing

In the summertime, you will want to make sure to bring lightweight and breathable clothing. It’s still a good idea to bring a lite jacket or hoodie – as most places keep the air conditioning quite cold.

Outside of the summer months, the dry high desert air can mean crisp mornings, warm days and cool evenings. Make sure you pack outfits that can be layered (and unlayered) throughout the day.

Phoenix Travel Essentials

The sun in Phoenix is intense. Wearing sunscreen is a must year-round. Additionally, you will want to bring sunglasses and a wide-brimmed travel hat to keep the sun off your face. Of course, don’t forget to pack your swimsuit, as well!

Durable Shoes

Whether you plan to spend your vacation strolling Phoenix malls or hiking in the Arizona mountains, you will want comfortable shoes.

I wear flip flops with good arch support year round. However, wintertime visitors will likely want to pack a pair of travel sneakers, too.

Top Tip: Read all our advice and honest reviews for the Best Travel Shoes.

Travel Camera

The scenic desert landscapes and PHX sights are best captured with a real camera. We always travel with our DSLR Canon Rebel and a 18-135mm lens. Find out what equipment suits your photo needs in our Best Travel Camera article.
