#1 Enjoy the Outdoors at Riverfront Park

Built to host the Expo ’74 World Fair, Riverfront Park still attracts millions of visitors to Spokane every year. The 100-acre site sits on an island and is one of the best places to visit in Spokane.
US Pavilion

As the 1974 World Fair’s theme was an International Exposition of the Environment, the Pavilion was designed to incorporate nature into the man-made structure.
Although it was never intended to be permanent, citizens rallied to keep the unique complex.
Great Northern Clocktower

The slender spire that stands in Riverfront Park is all that is left of the Great Northern Depot.
The building, which was built in 1902 on Havermale Island as a stop on the Great Northern Railroad, was demolished to make room for the 1974 World Expo.
The impressive tower has clock faces on each side that measure 9 feet across. To keep accurate time, it must be wound every week with a hand crank!
Looff Carrousel
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Riverfront Park Carousel was built by Chalres Looff in 1909.
The ride was originally placed at Natatorium Park, but was relocated here in 1975. Still operational – complete with the original organ from 1900 – the carrousel is a top attraction.
Ice Age Playground and Spokane Skate Park
Families won’t want to miss the Riverfront Park Ice Age Playground. Featuring a 3-story slide, a splash pad and climber, it aims to educate kids about the geography of the region.
In addition to the playground, a skatepark and basketball courts are located on the North Bank.
Fountains, Sculptures, and Walking Trails

Riverfront Park is also dotted with fountains, sculptures and several walking paths. One of the fun things in Spokane to do is to simply wander around to see what you might find!
#2 Get the Best View of Spokane Falls

The Upper and Lower Spokane Falls that tumble downstream are collectively the largest urban waterfall in the United States. The waterfalls are one of the best attractions in Spokane and an absolute must-see!
You can get an excellent view from Huntington Park or by walking halfway across the Monroe Street Bridge. Be sure to check out the design details of the bridge – like the bison skulls – while you’re there!

For a unique vantage point, hop on the Spokane Skyride. The 15-minute cable car trip – which is one of the top Spokane things to do with kids – gives you an aerial view from just above the falls.

The Centennial Trail is a 37-mile paved path designated for pedestrians and cyclists. It stretches east from Nine Mile Falls to the Idaho border, and actually continues another 25 miles on to Coeur d’Alene.
#4 Stroll the Spokane Sculpture Walk

Artwork abounds throughout Riverfront Park and along the Centennial Trail in the form of sculptures.
Enjoyed by both residents and visitors, they are top Spokane, Washington attractions. The works span numerous styles from realistic renditions to abstract creations to whimsical musings.

Trying to find the more than 30 sculptures is one of the entertaining and free things to do Downtown Spokane.
Among our favorites are The Childhood Express (Radio Flyer Slide), the Garbage Eating Goat and the Dance of the Redband Trout. You can just wander or use this handy walking tour.
#5 Eat the Best Burgers in Spokane

You don’t have to go far to find a good burger in Spokane. The city boasts an excess of establishments cranking out everything from gourmet burgers to on-the-go fare.
While our trip was not focused on finding the best places to eat in Spokane, we successfully stumbled on the best burger at D. Lish’s.
Locally owned D. Lish’s Burgers has the motto of Always Fresh, Never Frozen. Their juicy burgers are topped with secret spices and daily-made sauces. Go with the classic D. Lish’s Double and the hand-cut fries!

While our burger cravings were satisfied at D.Lish, we were tempted into trying a few other burgers in town. They, too, lived up to the hype.
Other burger establishments that also earn rave reviews are Wisconsinburger and Seattle-based (and Sir Mix-A-Lot made-famous) Dicks Hamburgers.
#6 Satisfy that Sweet Tooth at Donut Parade

When we got an insider tip from a local that this place makes the best donuts in Spokane, we couldn’t resist getting a taste to see if it was true.
The bakery first opened in 1968 – when they became well-known for their homemade maple bars.

Although the shop closed for a short time and reopened under new ownership, this classic Spokane donut shop retains an old school vibe. Oh – and just so you know – the donuts are delicious!
