Estrela Lisbon Portugal's Most Underrated District by JetSettingFools.com

Estrela: Lisbon, Portugal’s Most Underrated District

The Estrela District in Lisbon, Portugal is woefully underrated. Located on the west side of the city center – and easy to reach by tram, bus or even on foot – Estrela shines brightly as a lesser-visited neighborhood.

We swoon over the long lanes lined with pastel-painted homes and spend leisurely afternoons walking through the lush parks bursting with color.

Dining in Estrela is exceptional, too. Some of our most memorable meals have been consumed in unassuming eateries tucked into the enclave.

Why Visit Estrela: Lisbon, Portugal

When planning a trip to Lisbon, it’s easy to overlook Estrela. There are just a handful of attractions, so squeezing it into your Lisbon Itinerary isn’t always a priority.

But the fact that it feels a bit different than the rest of Lisbon is exactly what we love about Estrela. It’s a place where you can wander – away from the heavy crowds – and appreciate the grand architecture, green parks and delicious local food.

It was on our second trip to Lisbon that we dipped out toes into Estrela. Intrigued by the distant rising dome of the Estrela Basilica, we routed our way from the Alfama District to Estrela.

On a return trip, we decided to make Estrela our base for a month-long stay. We navigated through the sloping streets, always eager to discover hidden gems.

10 Things To Do in Estrela, Lisbon

Our list of Estrela things to do features some of our favorite experiences – as well as a few suggestions from locals.

Later, we share a map of Estrela marked with attractions so that you can easily plan your exploration of the area.

#1 Ride a Lisbon Tram to Estrela

View of Tram 28 on the tracks in Lisbon Portugal

Riding a tram is an essential Lisbon experience for tourists – and it’s a perfect way to get to Estrela. In fact, there are two lines that rattle right through Estrela: Tram 25 and Tram 28.

The historic yellow carriages on the Lisbon Tram 28 line are the top choice. Not only because they are classic, but as the route passes through the notable neighborhoods of Graca, Alfama, Baixa and ends in Estrela.

Join the queue (and there will be one) at Martim Moniz to hop onboard a westbound Tram 28 and ride to the final stop – Campo Ourique/Prazeres.

Ride Tram 25, Lisbon, Portugal

Alternatively, catch Tram 25 at Corpo Santo in Cais do Sodre. Typically less crowded, Tram 25 winds through a more residential section, passes the Estrela Church and terminates at Campo Ourique/Prazeres – just like Tram 28.

Both Tram 25 and Tram 28 tickets can be purchased from the driver in cash or via contactless payment (€3.20 each ride). The Lisbon Card also covers tram fares.

#2 Marvel at Estrela Basilica

Dome view of Estrela Basilica, Lisbon, Portugal

The towering dome of Basilica da Estrela can be seen from afar, but even more impressive from up close. We believe it is one of the Best Churches in Lisbon and reason enough to go to Estrela.

Dating to the late 1700s, it was built under the direction of Queen Maria I of Portugal, in thanks for bearing a son and therefore an heir.

The most unique feature is the intricate marble. Using hues of grey, pink and yellow marble designs are found throughout the church.

For a fee, you can take a peek at the elaborate 500-piece Nativity Scene that was created in 1785. An additional ticket allows you the opportunity to climb to the rooftop dome for sensational views.

#3 Parade through Estrela Park

Take a Walk through Estrela Park, Lisbon, Portugal

Just across the street from the basilica is the elegantly designed Estrela Park. A welcome respite from the buzzing city streets, the manicured gardens are an oasis.

Created in 1842, the park is known for its array of exotic plants and artistic works. Paths weave through the public space and at the center is a gazebo where musicians play in the summertime.

The tranquil environment, ample benches and duck pond make it an attractive park for all types of visitors.

#4 Walk the Streets in Lapa

View from the Streets of Lisbon, Portugal

Lapa – a sub-district of Estrela – is one of the most enchanting areas to discover. The posh neighborhood sits atop a hill and is awash with tile-covered buildings and pastel-painted homes.

In addition to the many foreign embassies, Lapa also hosts the official residence of the Prime Minister of Portugal and the Portuguese Parliament building, Assembly of the Republic (also called Palacio de Sao Bento).

Spend some time routing your way through the streets. Be sure to take in the sumptuous view from Rua da Lapa that stretches down Rua dos Remedios da Lapa. It’s one of the many incredible Viewpoints in Lisbon.

Rua Sacramento a Lapa is also not to be missed. Considered to be one of the prettiest streets in Lisbon, here you will find old mansions, tile-covered Neo-Manueline houses and several embassies.

#5 Tour the Prazeres Cemetery

Spring flowers falling, Prazeres Cemetery, Lisbon, Portugal

Some may think it is eerie to visit a cemetery, but the Lisbon Cemiterio dos Prazeres is simply stunning. Both beautiful and peaceful, we love wandering through Prazeres.

Founded in 1833, the cemetery is the final resting place for some of Lisbon’s most elite residents. The walkways are lined with ornate mausoleums and magnificent tombstones.

From the west end, there are sweeping views of the 25 de Abril Bridge, Tagus River and Cristo Rei. There is no admission fee; it’s one of the Best Free Things To Do in Lisbon

#6 Explore Tapada das Necessidades Park

Tapada das Necessidades Park, Estrela, Lisbon, Portugal

The amazing Tapada das Necessidades is one of our favorite Lisbon green spaces. It’s a sublime place for exploring, relaxing as well as picnicking.

Once part of the Palacio das Necessidades Estate, the former palace grounds have been open to the public since 1910.

Within the sprawling space, you will find tree-covered paths, a fascinating cactus garden (one of Europe’s biggest), a few abandoned structures and roaming peacocks!

#7 Spend an Afternoon at a Estrela Museum

Classic Arches, Lisbon, Portugal

To be honest, we have always been so enamored with the beautiful parks and ornate architecture, we have yet to step inside any museums here!

That said, there are quite a few highly acclaimed cultural institutions in the neighborhood and it would be remiss to leave them off our list.

The National Museum of Ancient Art – or Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga – is one of the most significant art museums in all of Lisbon. The Hieronymus Bosch altarpiece – Triptych of the Temptation of St. Anthony – is a highlight of the collection.

Museu da Marioneta focuses on the history of puppets. The venue displays marionettes from all over the world and has interactive exhibits, as well.

Museu do Oriente is dedicated to the historic relationship between Portugal and Asia. In addition to the Asian artifacts, they have a beautiful restaurant that overlooks the Tagus River and Pone 25 de Abril Bridge.

Another cultural activity in Estrela is visiting the former homes of Lisbon’s most renowned residents that are now museums.

For example, you can visit the Amalia Rodrigues House (famous Fado singer), Casa Fernando Pessoa (Portuguese writer) and Museu Joao de Deus (Poet).

#8 Eat Local in Estrela

Order of Bacalhau and Rice, Lisbon, Portugal

Another thing we love about Estrela are the small eateries that serve delicious regional fare. (Even though these are local gems, we highly recommend booking a table!)

Lezíria Casa de Petiscos is a small and inviting establishment. Specializing in small plate portions that are perfect for sharing, every Portuguese dish we have ordered here exceeded our expectations.

Taberna Dos Novos Tempos is a place we found on a whim – and we loved the entire experience from start to finish.

We were welcomed into the small tavern and treated to a spectacular homecooked dinner. The Bacalhau a Bras remains one of my all-time favorite Lisbon meals.

For after-dinner drinks, our favorite spot is Cascavel. A chill hangout with friendly service, it’s an ideal place to sit and savor a glass of local wine after a long day of sightseeing.

#9 Check Out Campo de Ourique Market

Red Wine made special for Mercado de Campo Ourique, Lisbon, Portugal

Although not officially within the boundaries of Estrela, Campo do Ourique Market is a must-see when touring the area.

Similar (but on a much smaller scale than) to the revitalized Time Out Market, the Mercado de Campo de Ourique has an intimate, community ambiance. The hall itself dates to the 1930s and was completely renovated in 2013.

Vendors craft traditional meals and Portuguese snacks – along with a good choice of international fare. For something to drink, we recommend the special label Mercado de Campo de Ourique wine.

The most amazing chocolate cake ever, Lisbon, Portugal

If you are looking for something sweet, stop in at the adjacent O Melhor Bolo de Chocolate do Mundo.

The small bakery, whose name translates to The Best Chocolate Cake in the World, makes an outrageously incredible confection of layered, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate pie.

#10 Go to the LX Factory

Visit the LX Market, Lisbon, Portugal

On the southwestern border of the Estrela neighborhood is the fascinating LX Factory. The former industrial zone has been transformed into the ultimate hipster hangout.

Creative street art decorates the former textile factory that now house boutique shops and chic restaurants. The 2-story Ler Devagar Bookshop – with its floor to ceiling bookshelves – is one of our favorite places at LX.

Although most shops close by early evening, it’s worth sticking around for the ample happy hour specials. If you’re looking for dining options, 1300 Taberna and Cantina LX are our recommendations, just be sure to book ahead. Saúde!

As one of the best neighborhoods in Lisbon, Estrela is a great place to stay during your visit to the city.

When our friend met up with us recently, she stayed at The Felix 10 Boutique B&B – and it’s fabulous! The unique property features spacious rooms, an outdoor breakfast garden and a rooftop lounge.

JAM Lisbon is another top-rated hotel in Estrela. We haven’t actually seen the rooms at JAM, but we do love their bar and pool! With fun and casual vibes, JAM is a good option for couples and traveling friends.
