We typically avoid traveling to Europe in the summer. Besides the daunting crowds and high prices, we detest sweltering heat.
I break into a sweat at the mere thought of exploring a European city during a summertime heat wave. The idea of baking on a beach on a sun-drenched coast has me running for air-conditioned cover or higher latitudes.

But not all of Europe experiences scorching temperatures. In fact, we have discovered quite a few European cool climate destinations where we can beat the summer heat altogether.
Top European Cool Climate Summer Destinations
With mild temperatures and engaging attractions, these European ‘coolcation’ destinations are the perfect antidote for summer travelers who are averse to hot weather.
#1 Scottish Highlands
Average High Summer Temperatures: 66° Fahrenheit
Anyone looking for a place to go in Europe that is not hot in the summer should turn their sights to Scotland. While Edinburgh and Glasgow both have mild summer weather, head for the hills of the Scottish Highlands for even cooler temps.
With wide open spaces, quaint towns, heaps of history and high temperatures topping out in the upper 60s, the Highlands are sublime.
Hiking is a supreme summertime activity here. From long distance trails – like the West Highland Way and Great Glen Way – to epic treks on Isle of Skye, we absolutely love getting outdoors in Scotland.
Inverness, the capital of the Highlands, makes a fantastic base for exploring regional sights – like Loch Ness, Cairngorms National Park, whisky distilleries and historic locations. Plus, there are tons of fun and free Things To Do in Inverness, too!
#2 Iceland
Summer Average Temps: 59° Fahrenheit
Full disclosure, we haven’t visited Iceland in summer yet – but it has long been on our list as a place to go in Europe in July and August that won’t be too hot.
We took our trip to the country in the dead of winter. Despite the limited daylight, we were pleasantly surprised that Winter in Iceland was not as harsh as we had anticipated.
The landscapes were otherworldly – and we only imagine that they would be all the more stunning during summer (when everything is not frozen and blanketed in snow).
The top summertime attractions are the dazzling waterfalls and black sand beaches on the South Coast. Of course, the sights on the famed Golden Circle are a must-see, as well.
Plus, relaxing in outdoor thermal pools – like the Blue Lagoon – are magical any time of year in Iceland!
#3 Galway, Ireland
Average Temperatures in July: 64° Fahrenheit
Ranking as one of the coolest places in Europe during summer, Galway, Ireland is a superb destination.
The lively city is steeped in history and the copious number of pubs are hopping with live music both day and night.
Not only is the city itself a fun place to visit, but it’s also the perfect jumping off point for adventures to the Aran Islands, Connemara National Park and the iconic Cliffs of Moher near Doolin.
As the entire island is relatively cool, it’s possible to plan a summertime trip that navigates multiple destinations.
On a 1-Week Ireland coolcation, you can also visit Dublin and Belfast (in Northern Ireland) without breaking into a sweat.
#4 Swiss Alps
Summer Average High Temperatures: 66° Fahrenheit
The Swiss Alps are undoubtedly one of the best cooler destinations in Europe. And oh-so-stunning.
I so clearly recall the welcome blast of cool air that greeted me on my very first summer trip to Europe (way back in 2000). That August, there was still snow in the mountains – and it was glorious!
During that European family vacation, we hiked, explored and savored the landscapes in southern Bern and relished the reprieve from the heat that was peaking elsewhere in Europe.
Note that even cities in the Swiss Plateau (like Zurich) and along the Rhine River (like Basel) can be pleasant during the summer months.
#5 Helsinki, Finland
Summer Average High Temperatures: 69° Fahrenheit
Visiting Helsinki in the summer is like inhaling a deep breath of fresh air. The lush and aqueous landscape is highlighted by unique architecture and hip districts.
The sunny skies and crisp atmosphere are perfect for exploring outdoors. We spent long days discovering Suomenlinna Fortress, the sensational shoreline and pretty parks.
If a heat wave or storm happens to pass through, there are plenty of Things To See in Helsinki indoors, too – like the intriguing churches, fabulous markets and traditional cafes.
Tips for European Cool Climate Summer Destinations
Whether you are planning a completely cool-weather trip to Europe or are creating a multi-stop itinerary that includes cooler climates, we have a few important pieces of advice.
Bring a Fan
We started traveling with a portable fan a few years ago and it’s been a total game changer. It’s great for hot days and stuffy hotels.
The travel fan we use has a rechargeable battery and a stand – and it’s small enough to fit in a purse.
Pack Rain Gear
While the cooler climate destinations that we feature are exceptional places to go to avoid the heat in Europe, they also have a fairly high chance of rain during the summer months.
We’re happy to take a rain shower over a blistering heat sweat bath. We just make sure to pack a raincoat and travel umbrella.

Avoid the Outdoors in the Heat of the Day
If you are trying to stay cool on your European trip, make sure you plan your itinerary to avoid being outside during the hottest part of the day.
Plan your city sightseeing and walking tours for the morning and visit museums and churches in the afternoon.
Whatever time of day you are out and about, staying hydrated is key. Carry a travel water bottle and fill up whenever you can!
Don’t Expect Air Conditioning
Not all hotels in Europe have air conditioning – especially in places with cool climates. The good news is that we personally have never needed air con in the destinations on our list.
That said, if your European travels are taking you to warmer weather cities, be sure to filter your hotel search to include a/c. You can find more lodging advice in our article, How To Book the Best Hotels.
