Best Underrated German Cities to Visit
This list is based on our personal experiences during countless trips to Germany. If you have already been to Berlin and marveled at Munich, consider adding these underrated cities in Germany to your European Travel Itinerary!
#1 Dusseldorf, Germany
We tuned into Dusseldorf when we heard whispers about its epic Christmas Market – and it didn’t disappoint!
The fairytale wintertime festivities completely captivated us with themed markets, traditional fare and a totally jubilant atmosphere.
It was as we began to explore the city sights, however, that we truly fell for Dusseldorf. The Altstadt is full of old-world charm…and we soaked it all in.
Known as the ‘Longest Bar in the World,’ the Old Town is also home to more than 300 bars – all of which serve the local Altbier that is unique to Dusseldorf.
The city sits on the Rhine River and the wide pedestrian Rhine Promenade is a prime spot for strolling, relaxing and taking in the picturesque views.
From the riverside, it’s apparent how the city fuses tradition with innovation. We could watch sheep grazing in a meadow on one side of the river, while admiring the modern architecture that graces the other side.
Altogether, Dusseldorf is a gem of a city with plenty of fun things to do – and it’s just a stone’s throw from neighboring Cologne.
#2 Freiburg im Breisgau
We actually stumbled onto Freiburg during a trip to Basel, Switzerland. On the hunt for a fun day trip, Freiburg’s verdant nature, historic sights and tasty food seemed to fit the bill.
From the moment we arrived, Freiburg surprised us. On a bright and sunny day, the Medieval town was vibrant and jovial and we eagerly enjoyed the Top Freiburg Attractions.
The Freiburg Munster, the city’s 13th century Gothic cathedral, is a must-see. We were in awe of the intricate façade and magnificent stained-glass windows.
Also not to be missed are the age-old Martinstor and Schwabentor Towers. Once part of the city’s fortifications, they offer a glimpse into it’s storied past.
A unique attribute to the city is the Bachle. These streams flow along the streets and remain from a time when they provided water to the town and help fight fires.
The highlight of our trip to Freiburg, however, was the great outdoors. The city is situated on the edge of the Black Forest. Trailheads are just steps from the Old Town and lead to natural beauty and observation towers.
#3 Frankfurt
The city of Frankfurt is no secret. It’s the Finance Capital of Europe and a major international transport hub. Yet, many travelers skip visiting Frankfurt – and we believe that is a mistake.
The skyscrapers and corporate towers that make up the business district are striking. Some of the tallest buildings in the European Union stand among them.
Travelers who are unimpressed by modern architecture need not fret; there is so much more to see in Frankfurt. Look in the shadows of the high rise buildings and you will find the charming Frankfurt Altstadt.
Rich in culture and history, the heart of the Old Town is marked by the mesmerizing Romerberg Square and is best discovered on foot.
Half-timbered houses encircle the space, making it an idyllic setting for the Frankfurt Christmas Market. The magical festival is precisely what lured us to visit Frankfurt in December – and it far exceeded our expectations (as did the city itself!).
The cultural institutions – like the renowned Stadel Art Museum and lush Palmengarten Botanical Garden – are even more reasons to spend at least One Day in Frankfurt.
#4 Dresden
Dresden is a dazzling place to visit in Germany. While perhaps not one of the completely underrated German cities, we feel Dresden doesn’t gets the credit it deserves.
With its rich cultural heritage and meticulously rebuilt Old Town, Dresden has a unique story to tell.
We spent days swooning over the ornate architecture. It’s truly a Baroque masterpiece and Walking in Dresden is like touring an open-air museum.
From the lavish gardens of the Zwinger Palace to the steeple of the Frauenkirche to the riverside views, Dresden is radiant at every turn.
That said, there is more to see than the historic center. Just north of the Elbe River is New Town, the city’s artistic and bohemian district that elicits a fun and funky vibe.
Beyond the city, the Elbe Valley is dotted with gorgeous palaces, stunning churches, hillside vineyards and quaint villages. The scenic landscapes look like they were torn from the pages of a storybook.
While Dresden is a popular stop when traveling between Berlin and Prague, we believe it’s well worth spending at least 3 Days in Dresden to discover the beauty of Saxony.
#5 Wurzburg
We were introduced to the lesser-known German destination of Wurzburg while traveling by river cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest. Of all the stops on our 2-week trip, Wurzburg was our favorite.
Nestled in the heart of the Franconian wine region, Wurzburg is pure delight. Even with its royal palace, mighty fortress and inviting Old Town, the Bavarian city manages to feel like a secret.
The UNESCO-listed Wurzburg Residence is the top tourist attraction – and the grandiose interior rivals that of Versailles.
Another reason to visit this underrated German town is the hill-topping Marienberg Fortress. From the lofty perch, you can appreciate the Wurzburg skyline of steeples and bell towers.
The best way to wind down a day in Wurzburg is with a local beverage. No place in the city is more atmospheric than the Old Stone Bridge. Locals and tourists alike gather together to sip and savor the views. Prost!
