An undeniable merriment can be sensed throughout the city, making the holidays a fantastic time to visit Madrid!

Christmas in Madrid

Spain is often pegged as a summer destination, but we believe visiting Madrid in December is ideal. The city – a major shopping destination – is beautifully decorated for the holidays. Weather-wise, temperatures can be brisk, but the skies are usually sunny – making it perfect for sightseeing.

On two occasions we have visited Madrid at Christmastime. Our first winter stay was at the end of December to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Madrid. It was clear that the city was still in holiday mode, but we missed the excitement that leads up to December 25th.

Recently, we returned ahead of Christmas to experience the pageantry in full swing. It’s safe to say the sparkling metropolis did not disappoint! We spent our time discovering the best Madrid Christmas sights and reveling in the jubilant atmosphere.

#1 See the Stunning Madrid Nativity Scenes

View Madrid Nativity Scenes, Christmas in Spain

The Nativity Scene – or Portal de Belen – is one of the most important symbols of Christmas in Madrid. During the Christmas season, Nativity Sets decorate homes, churches, offices and public spaces and we loved seeking out these displays.

In addition to the usual Nativity characters, the Belenes in Madrid also feature townspeople, farm animals and harvested produce. In many cases, Madrid Portal de Belen displays feature the entire town of Bethlehem, complete with miniature houses and cobblestone streets. The most intricate Nativity Scenes are enhanced with live plants, flickering lights, flowing water and moving parts.

Famous Madrid Nativity Scenes, Spain

Visiting the most extravagant Portal de Belen displays is a Madrid, Spain Christmas tradition. However, there is one Belen that should not be missed: Belen del Ayuntamiento de Madrid.

The Belen del Ayuntamiento is displayed by the Madrid City Council at the CentroCentro Operations Hall inside Palacio de Cibeles. Incorporating more than 200 figurines, live floral elements and a working water mill, the Belen is truly a work of art. Visitors can view the spectacle for free.

Other impressive Belenes in Madrid are the 300-year-old Neapolitan Nativity Scene at the Royal Palace and the 18th century display at the Museo de Historia de Madrid. Visitors can also find Belenes in every church in Madrid.

Travel Tip: A few of the Madrid Nativity Scenes also feature the Caganer, a Catalan-born defecating figurine that wiggled its way into Spanish Belenes during the 18th century. We share more about this odd tradition in our Barcelona Christmas Guide

#2 Peruse the Stalls at Plaza Mayor Christmas Market

Plaza Mayor Christmas Market and Tree, Madrid, Spain

The grandiose Plaza Mayor marks the heart of Madrid. Ringed with beautiful balconies and dining establishments, the spacious square transforms into the biggest and best Madrid, Spain Christmas Market. The Xmas Market is open from November through the end of December.

Unlike the gluhwein-sloshing Christmas Markets in Frankfurt or the Xmas Fun Fairs in London, the Plaza Mayor Madrid Christmas Market is exclusively for shopping.

This market originated in the 17th century in the adjoining Santa Cruz Square. For years, the Plaza Santa Cruz Christmas Market was highly regarded as the best place to buy Nativity figurines, holiday décor and children’s toys. Now relocated into the larger Plaza Mayor Square, vendors still peddle similar wares from red Christmas huts.

The hottest items at the Madrid Xmas market are the Nativity pieces – the sheer volume and variety is mind-bending. Visitors can buy single figurines and Nativity Set enhancements to add to their collections – or purchase a complete set.

Additionally (and, oddly), some traders at the market sell quirky modern goods, like goofy toys and gag gifts. Funny hats are also a popular commodity – as they, too, are one of the unique Madrid Christmas traditions.

Travel Tip: While shopping at the more than 100 Madrid Christmas booths, don’t miss the enormous, encased Plaza Mayor Portal de Belen Nativity Scene in the middle of the market near the Felipe III Statue.

#3 Visit Other Christmas Markets in Madrid

View of Plaza de Espana, Madrid, Spain

It’s true that Plaza Mayor hosts the best Christmas market in Madrid, but it’s not the only one. Madrid Christmas Markets – or Mercadillos de Navidad – dot the landscape in December, taking up residence in open squares and along pretty streets.

The Madrid Arts and Crafts Fair is a favorite Christmastime festival, where traders sell handmade goods and artisanal products. Located on Paseo de Recoletos – one of the most beautiful boulevards in the city – the Arts and Crafts Mercadillo de Navidad is a fantastic place to pick up a unique gift or handcrafted souvenir.

Feria Dulces de Navidad Christmas Market, situated on Plaza de Isabell II (also called Plaza de Opera), is an exceptional festival, specializing in famous Madrid Christmas treats and culinary treasures.

We think one of the best holiday markets, however is La Navidena, which is hosted in Plaza de Espana. It is an all-in-one Christmas market, complete with food, beverages, specialty products and an ice-skating rink (which is next on our list of Madrid Christmas Things To Do!).

A festive vibe also lures families and friends to Plaza de Santa Cruz. Although not technically a market, the enchanting Christmas carousel delights both the young and old.

Travel Tip: Each of the Mercadillos de Navidad in Madrid have their own dates. We recommend checking the market schedules before making plans to visit.

#4 Spin around a Madrid Ice Skating Rink

Ice Skating, Plaza de Espana, La Navidena, Madrid, Spain

Even though the weather is typically mild and mostly sunny, ice skating is one of the fun activities in Madrid, Spain at Christmas time!

A seasonal, outdoor ice skating rink is assembled in Plaza de Espana as part of the exceptional La Navidena holiday fair. Guests can lace up skates and twirl around the ice in the iconic square.

The Matadero Madrid Ice Rink, on the south side of the city, is another place to go ice skating in Madrid. The repurposed space is also a museum and exhibition center, so it’s easy to spend an entire day at the complex.

The Ice Rink at Cibeles Palace is an enchanting place to go ice skating – as the rink is idyllically situated under a glass dome. Plus, they have a small on-site market.

Top Tip: Ice skating sessions typically cost less than 10 euros – and includes skate rental. It’s actually one of the more affordable things to do at Christmas in Madrid!

#5 Gaze Up at a Madrid Christmas Tree

Giant Christmas Tree in Puerta del Sol, Madrid, Spain

Christmas trees are a traditional symbol of the winter holiday, but the best Christmas tree in Madrid is a modern marvel.

Standing at 115 feet, the Christmas Tree in Puerta del Sol is a rising metal cone decorated with 42,000 LED bulbs. After dark, when the lights are aglow, it is a spectacular sight. Visitors can even walk into the center of the tree for a unique perspective.

Contemporary, illuminated Christmas trees are one of the typical holiday decorations in Madrid. You can find the glowing cones in the city’s most popular squares, like Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Espana and Plaza de Santa Ana (one of our favorite squares in the city!).

Trip Tip: Puerta del Sol is an excellent place to begin your city sightseeing! Use our Self Guided Madrid Walking Tour that begins in Puerta del Sol and takes in all prime sights.

#6 Shop for a Madrid Christmas Ornament

Madrid Christmas Market Shopping Stalls, Spain

Madrid is a shopping destination with major retailers, massive malls and boutique shops. All of these spots sell Madrid Christmas ornaments in the month leading up to the holiday. We believe the best places to go shopping in Madrid for a special holiday ornament are on the most picturesque streets.

The most famous street for shopping is Calle Gran Via. The busy thoroughfare, nicknamed ‘The Spanish Broadway,’ is lined with brand-name outlets and luxury department stores.

At Christmastime, we prefer the ambiance on the pedestrianized Calle de Preciados. It’s one of the historic shopping lanes in Madrid city center. The short 500-meter route boasts fashion brands, local shops and the massive El Corte Ingles Shopping Center. This Spanish, family-owned department store that has a dazzling Christmas shop full of glittering ornaments.

Madrid Christmas Chocolate Sweets, Spain

The Christmas holiday in Madrid is sweetened by an exceptionally tasty treat: Turron. A delicious nougat, Turron is made with honey, nuts and egg whites. It has been a popular confection in Spain since the 15th century. The delectable bite is available at sweet shops around the city during the holidays, but the two most popular places for Turron are Casa Mira and Vicens.

Madrid’s Best Nougat Christmas Sweets, Spain

Casa Mira is a historic sweet shop in Madrid that was established in the year 1842. They make a classic Spanish Turron using a traditional recipe. The store itself is beautiful – and, in addition to Turron, Casa Mira churns out handmade cookies, cakes and marzipan.

Vicens, dating to 1775, is an artisanal chocolatier that specializes in Turron. Founded in northeastern Spain, Vicens has multiple retail outlets in Madrid – including a shop on Gran Via where they offer free samples!

#8 Try Your Luck at the Spanish Christmas Lottery

People in line for tickets to the Spanish Lotto, Madrid Christmas

One of the more unusual Christmas traditions in Madrid is the Spanish Lotto – commonly known as ‘El Gordo’ or ‘The Fat One’. While a lottery may seem somewhat counter-intuitive to the giving season, The Christmas Spanish Lottery ranks as one of the biggest in the world.

The total yearly cash prizes exceed 2.5 billion euros and the drawing takes place on December 22. Tickets, which can be purchased from shops or street-side kiosks, cost a shocking 200 euros (but ‘partial tickets’ are available for just 20 euros). As yes, foreigners are eligible to win, as the Spanish Lottery is open to everyone.

Pro Tip: Many Madrilenos flock to Dona Manolita to buy tickets, as it’s considered the ‘lucky shop’, but the line wraps around the building. Those enjoying a Madrid Christmas Vacation can join the frenzy – or avoid the queue completely and buy from any vendor.

#9 Walk Under the Glow of Madrid Christmas Lights

Paseo Del Prado at Christmas, Madrid, Spain

Without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Madrid during Christmas is to stroll along festively decorated streets and through glimmering squares. Much of the city is draped in bright lights during the holidays, but there are a few festooned spots that are must-see sights.

The top streets for basking in the bright glow of Christmas lights are Paseo del Prado, Gran Via, Calle de Alcala and Calle Serrano. These four spots are in close proximity to Plaza de Cibeles and Puerta de Alcala, too.

The ‘Gigantic Light Ball’ – an enormous, illuminated ornament – is a top destination for Christmas light seekers. It is usually displayed at the east end of Gran Via, but during our trip it resided in Plaza de Espana near the Sabatini Gardens.

Plaza de Santa Ana Christmas Tree, Madrid, Spain

Naturally, Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol are two prime squares for Christmas lights in Madrid, Spain. However, Plaza de Canalejas and Plaza de Santa Ana are adorned in wonderful lights, as well.

Sightseeing Tip: The Madrid Christmas Bus is a fun way to see the holiday lights! During the 40-minute ride, Madrid Christmas Light Bus Tour participants can take in the joyous decor from the open-air, double-decker bus. Prefer a private tour? Christmas Madrid FAQs

Lights During Christmas, Madrid, Spain

We have highlighted what to do in Madrid for Christmas travelers. However, there several frequently asked questions about visiting Madrid at Christmas Time we want to answer.

How Long is the Christmas Season in Madrid, Spain?

The Christmas season is celebrated in Madrid from the end of November until the beginning of January. Festivities typically kick off a week before advent and continue until January 6th – which is Dia de Reyes or Three Kings Day.

In fact, the height of the Madrid Christmas celebrations is not December 25th, but rather the evening of January 5th when the Three Wise Men bring gifts to children. The Madrid Christmas Parade – also called the Three Kings Parade – is the biggest celebration of the season.

When Can I See Madrid Christmas Decorations?

Most of the Madrid Xmas lights are switched on the last Thursday of November and brighten the city until January 6th.

What is Open in Madrid on Christmas Day?

Those who are spending the holiday in the city are no doubt wondering what to do in Madrid on Christmas Day. Most museums, attractions, shops and restaurants are closed – not only on Christmas Day, but also on Christmas Eve (and again on NYE and NYD).

Pre-planning a Madrid Christmas Dinner is essential – as only a few places will be open. Historically, Mercado de San Miguel (the most famous food market) is open for limited hours on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Hotels and international restaurants are usually a good option, as well.

One of the best things to do in Madrid on Christmas Day is to take advantage of the amazing parks. The Metro runs on a reduced schedule but is still an option for getting around Madrid on Xmas Day.

Where Can I Find More Christmas Activities in Spain?

Every town and all cities across Spain celebrate Christmas, which is fantastic for travelers who want to experience the holiday season in more than one location.

In the past, we spent 1 Week in Spain during Christmas, discovering incredible holiday activities. We celebrated Christmas in Barcelona (where the weather was perfect for sightseeing on foot). Next, we traveled to Seville to indulge in delicious tapas while navigating through the coolest districts.

Our trip culminated in Madrid for NYE; just be sure to learn from our mistakes! Other Spanish cities that are highly recommended during the holiday season are Malaga, Gijon, Vigo and Cordoba.
