Just a 30 minute bus ride from the Dublin city center, yet a world away, is the coastal fishing village of Howth, Ireland. Leaving the buzzing city life behind, we traversed nine miles through suburbs before arriving at Ireland’s shoreline. We braved the threatening skies and set out to explore the quaint village on our day trip to Howth, Ireland.
Day trip to Howth, Ireland: The Harbour
We were immediately drawn to the West Pier of the harbor that is lined with seafood restaurants and shops selling the day’s fresh catch. In the marina, masts swayed with the swell. We battled the wind at the end of the pier for the expansive views of the ocean and the small island that sits off the north coast, Ireland’s Eye.
We walked along Harbour Road and the picturesque shops that front the water toward the East Pier. The sun was just right for views over Balscaddan Bay and the rocky shoreline. We watched a fishing boat return from sea that had a following of hundreds of seagulls.
Day trip to Howth, Ireland: St. Mary’s Abbey
Heading up Abbey Road, we passed the ruins of St. Mary’s Abbey – and when we got to Church Street, we took a right to get a better view. Now just a shell that stands in the middle of a cemetery, there has been a church on this site since 1042. The structure (that’s barely still standing) was built in the 14th century.
Day trip to Howth, Ireland: Town Center
We doubled back toward the direction of the town center where the Church of the Assumption prominently sits. Built in 1899 in the Gothic style, it features fine stained glass windows and carved Stations of the Cross.
We had been looking forward to hiking one of the many coastal paths, but the blustery/windy/rainy weather convinced us otherwise. Instead, we found a cozy pub in the center of town for a steaming bowl of seafood chowder.
Our day trip to Howth, Ireland gave us a fresh perspective on the country. There is much more to the island than just Dublin – and seeing Howth only made us want to see more.

Where To Stay
During our visit to Dublin, we stayed in this awesome Airbnb Apartment. (Not already a member of Airbnb? Use this link to create an account and save money on your first stay!) However, for those who prefer staying in traditional accommodations, there are many Dublin hotels to choose from in – or close to – the city center. Check out these top-rated hotels (based on guest reviews!) for your upcoming trip:
Or These Hostels:
Before You Go
- Don’t forget to pack a pair of lightweight and comfortable walking shoes. I (Sarah) have traveled with these shoes by Columbia, Skechers and Reef. Kris prefers wearing these shoes by Merrell and Sanuk.
- We’re certain you’ll be snapping tons of photos during your trip. Rather than relying on your mobile phone to capture the sights, upgrade to an actual camera for higher quality photos. We travel with a Canon Rebel (which takes amazing photos, but can be a bit clunky) and a Canon PowerShot ELPH (which takes beautiful pictures, is slim and lightweight – and the new models are wifi enabled so you can share your trip pics to social media in real time!).
- It’s easy to get turned around or lost in any new city! Be sure to have a good city map and/or guidebook prior to arriving.
- We think travel insurance is essential! If you haven’t already obtained travel insurance for your trip, travel protected with World Nomads.
